Essay on Mahatma Gandhi - 1383 Words

Gandhi perceives imperialism as a creation of Industrial development, which perpetuates greed, and the desire to increase profit at the expense of the body and society. Gandhi states. â€Å"Those who are intoxicated by modern civilization are not likely to write against it. Their care will be to find out facts and arguments in support of it, and this they do unconsciously† (Gandhi, chp 6). Gandhi’s presumes that civilization, like an incurable disease, and new-civilized creations are a limitation to the body and society. Thus, India’s helplessness is in conjunction with its British association. Moreover, a ‘disarmed India has no control of resistance of ‘western-civilization’ so then what is civilized justice? Their condition is worse than that of beasts. They are obliged to work, for the sake of millionaires, but by reproducing Manchester in India, our moral being will be sapped, and I call in support of my statement the very mill-bands as witnesses† (Gandhi, chp 19). It is inherent, that Gandhi’s perception of society is one without industrial capitalism. He saw machinery and materialism as greater representations of manipulation. The British had, like any imperialist civilization, a perpetuating greed to control natural resources for profit. Ultimately, in Gandhi’s eyes the British wanted to have complete sovereignty over political bodies in their colonial parts. Village life was on the verge of distinction, thus Gandhi’s ideology gave light to India’s grim vision of being truly independent. The Tierra Capri Gobble Story

Tierra Capri Gobble was sentenced to death in Alabama in 2005 for the beating death of her four-month-old son, Phoenix Cody Parrish. Phoenix Cody Parrish was born on August 8, 2004, in Plant City, Florida. Within 24 hours of being born Cody was removed from his mothers custody by the Florida Department of Children and Families. The department had previously charged Gobble with the abandonment of her first child, Jewell, and had removed her from her mothers care. Court Order to Stay Away Ignored Jewell and Cody were placed with Gobbles uncle, Edgar Parrish, who agreed to take temporary custody of the children. Parrish also agreed to keep the children away from Gobble and Codys father, Samuel Hunter. Both Gobble and Hunter were also given a court order to stay away from the children. Soon after gaining custody of Cody, Parrish moved to Dothan, Alabama. By the end of October 2004, both Gobble and Hunter had moved into Parrishs mobile home with him, his roommate Walter Jordan and the children. The Death of Cody Parish According to Gobble, in the early morning hours of December 15, 2004, she was having trouble getting Cody to go to sleep because he was fussing. At around 1:00 a.m. Gobble went to feed him. After he finished his bottle, she put him back in his crib. She checked on him again at around 9:00 a.m. and found him playing. Gobble went back to sleep and awoke at 11:00 a.m. When she went to check on Cody she discovered that he was not breathing. Gobble called Jordan, who was also in the trailer that morning. Jordan went to get Parrish, who was nearby. Parrish returned to the trailer and telephoned emergency 911. When paramedics arrived, Cody was unresponsive, and they rushed him to a local hospital. Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead. The Autopsy Report The autopsy showed that Cody died as a result of blunt-force trauma to his head. His skull had been fractured. Cody had numerous other injuries, including fractured ribs, a fracture to his right arm, fractures to both wrists, multiple bruises on his face, head, neck, and chest and a tear in the inside of his mouth that was consistent with a bottle having been shoved into his mouth. Officer Tracy McCord of the Houston County Sheriffs Department took Gobble into custody several hours after Cody was taken to the hospital. Gobble told McCord that she was Codys primary caretaker even though Parrish was his guardian and that she would occasionally get frustrated with him when he would not go to sleep. She admitted that she could have broken his ribs from holding him too tightly. Gobble also said and that when she was holding Cody she leaned down in the crib to get his blanket quickly and Codys head might have struck the side of the crib at that time. As a result of the autopsy and remarks Gobble made to McCord, she was charged with capital murder. The Trial The state prosecutors accused Gobble of slamming Codys head against his crib which resulted in his death. Dr. Jonas R. Salne, the emergency room doctor who treated Cody at Southeast Alabama Medical Center, testified that Cody had bruises, contusions, on his face, scalp, and chest - literally everywhere. He also testified that the injuries that Cody suffered would have been extremely painful. Tori Jordan testified that she had known Gobble for over two years and that she had periodically babysat Jewell. She said that Gobble had told her that if she couldnt have her children, no one could. Gobbles Testimony During the trial Gobble testified in her own defense and portrayed Hunter as abusive and domineering. She alluded to the fact that Hunter abused Cody. She also testified that she was the primary caretaker for the children even though she was under a court order to not be around her children. She said that several days before his death she noticed that Cody had bruises on his body, but she did not do anything because she was scared. Gobble further testified that she was the only person to have contact with Cody for the 10 hours immediately before his death. She did not telephone 9-1-1 when she realized he was not breathing because she did not want to get into trouble. Cross-Examination During her cross-examination, the State introduced a letter written by Gobble in which she wrote that she was responsible for Codys death. In the letter Gobble writes, Its my fault that my son died but I didnt mean for it to happen. The jury convicted Gobble of capital murder. By a vote of 10 to 2, it was recommended that Gobble be sentenced to death. The circuit court followed the jurys recommendation and sentenced Gobble to death. Also convicted: Samuel David Hunter pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to prison. He was released on February 25, 2009. Edgar Parrish pleaded guilty to aggravated child abuse and was released from prison on November 3, 2008. Thrown Away The body of Phoenix Cody Parrish was never claimed from the morgue. Gobbles father and step-mother, who testified in court that their daughter was a loving mother, never showed up to bury the child, nor did any other relative. A group of concerned citizens in Dothan felt as if the child, who had endured abuse from the time he was born, had simply been thrown away. A collection was organized and enough money was raised to buy clothes to bury Cody in, along with a casket and a burial plot. On December 23, 2004, Cody Parrish was buried by caring, tearful strangers.

Organizational culture is a term widely used but gives rise to uncertainty as there are different cultures that are prevalent in every organization. It can be said that the culture is something that the business practices to develop the way the organization handles its people. Culture also promotes the way the organization promote values as well as well as the beliefs (Ybema, Yanow and Sabelis, 2011). A culture can also be destroyed if the management feels that it has started to dysfunction. An organizational culture is therefore can be viewed as something which gives the company a sense of identity. The culture determines the way the company determines its values, languages, norms, meanings and the way the works are carried out in the organization (Schein, 2010). The culture of the organization also surrounds the things which is good for the company and the things which have proven to have worked in the past. The Bureaucracy and Post Bureaucracy culture It is a type of organization which gives emphasis on the speed, clarity, reliability, regularity, precision through the creation of a fixed division of the tasks and hierarchical supervision as well as detailed rules and regulations (Morgan, 1997: 17). The organizations which follow the bureaucracy system, functions in a machine like manner. They are more reliable and predictable as well as efficient and rational. The employees also have certain job responsibilities and they work under a firm hierarchy. These organizations need to adopt structures which will respond to the outside pressures. The company also has a motto that they organize the information of the world and make it useful and accessible throughout the world. The two founders of Google alternated their roles in the company. While Sergey Brin looked after the ethical part of the business, Larry Page focused on the social structure. The company has always received an acclamation for the organizational culture which is unusual (Berger, 2014). The organizational culture of Google is designed so as to encourage both creativity and loyalty. The company has grown to a large extent in the past few years. It has always kept innovation at the front and with this goal they have achieved to include web browser called Chrome, YouTube, Google maps. Google is a widely diver sified company and has several businesses apart from its online ventures. The company is run by its culture and not by the board of directors (Google.co.uk, 2015). Features The company strictly follows the 70-20-10 rule. The rule is that the employees of Google devotes 70% of their office hours time in doing the works and the projects which they are given. The people are also provided 20% free time of their work hours so that they are able to relax and think about new ideas related to their main projects. They can spend their free time by exercising, swim have free meals (Lederer and Hall, 2000). This is done so as to make the employees feel motivated and that they have the time to think about innovative ideas. The services like Gmail, Orkut, and Google News have all been an outcome of these independent endeavors (Stecher, 2010). The rest 10% of the time the employees are allowed to think what the employees want to pursue regardless of the ideas nature. The company values this strategy as it has led to many new innovations and also the driving force behind these new innovations. The company also encourages open communication between the employees and th e executives. Culture Google thinks that the company is what it is due to the people who work in the company. They hire people who are determined and smart. The company believes in ability of the people and not the experience of the people. The company strongly believes that the employees of the company share a common goal and vision. The company hails from all the walks of life and they try to speak in almost dozens of languages (Google.com, 2015). This is keeping in mind the global audience that the company serves. When the employees of the company are not working on any projects they indulge in a number of activities like beekeeping, cycling, and Frisbee etc. The company strives to maintain an open culture inside the organization. This means that the company makes the employees feel comfortable about sharing their opinions and ideas. The company holds weekly meetings in the caf or over the internet via email. In these meetings the employees can directly ask questions to Sergey and Larry and the other executives about any issues regarding the company (Kaye and Jordan-Evans, 2003). The cafes of Google are so designed so as to encourage interactions and communications between the employees and within the teams. This sparks conversation as well as communication about work as well as play. Fun at work Google constantly tries to create the most happiest and productive work cultures in the world. But many people doubt that the unorthodox workplace of the company and the huge perks the company provides often hampers the creativity of the employees. The company provides the employees tremendous luxuries (Meyer, 2010). There are play areas, coffee bars, open kitchens, cafes, outdoor terraces, free lunch, dinner as well as dinner. The company has a library which has private reading areas. Moreover the employees of the company; the engineers are allowed to design their desks as well as the workstations. The building is chaotic and the workers express themselves by scribbling on the walls. This is a much common practice that the company allows to the employees. The post bureaucracy culture of the organization has in turn made incorporated these practices. The company sees to it that the employees get all the benefits needed to make the employees think in an innovative way. The success of Google depends on innovativeness and collaboration. The employees think that being on the same floor in the workplace make the employee bridge psychological gap since people interact all the time. Moreover the employees in Google do not show that they are working as they tend to be in a relaxed mood even on the weekdays. The science and art of stress management is what the employees in Google are provided (The New York Times, 2013). Like the employees are given follow ups with personal health advisors. The office has even workout equipments on which the employees can train and workout. The employees of Google work very hard to met their mission that is to assemble the information of the world and make it accessible to the users. The thing that truly makes the company unique is their workplace culture. The workplace culture at Google encourages innovation and do not regard anything as impossible, thus making the company a great place to work (Vise and Malseed, 2005). Thus it can be seen that though Google is a post bureaucratic organization it has maintained its standard and in their work and carried out its mission. But the company is not strict with its hierarchal structure and all the employees work together and try to enjoy their task. The work is not mechanized and the employees are satisfied with their job.
